WireUP! 2012 UK briefing gets underway

The 2012 edition of WireUP! got underway last week at the University for Creative Arts, Farnham, Surrey UK. Guest speakers  Alex Blowers from Nominet, and Lara Pace from the Commonwealth Internet Governance Forum participated in the Briefing workshop on the 19th of January 2011, organised by the Journalism Department at the UCA in Surrey.

Alex Blowers from Nominet spoke to students about the work of Nominet as the UK registry of domain names and provided participants with an interesting oversight of the global discussion currently surround the Internet and its expansion. He also informed students about the annual IGF Meetings and their importance.Lara Pace from the Commowealth Internet Governance Forum, gave students a brief overview of the current work of the CIGF with particular reference to the Commonwealth Cybercrime Initiative.

The presentations were followed by a mind mapping workshop facilitated by University Staff. Lara and Alex both helped students in the formulation of their initial ideas in response to the WireUP! brief which this year will focus on Cybercrime and Cyber Security.

Lewis Fry, last year’s best entry award winner of the WireUP! project spoke to students about his personal experience attending an IGF Meeting and participating in the project.

Kate Russell from BBC Click joined students for an additional workshop on Monday 23rd January, to help develop submissions for WireUP!.

Content Submissions from Students are the UCA are expected to be recieved on the 10th of Februrary 2012.
